Downpour

This book holds a place in my heart unlike any other. In the fall of 2003, I had been praying and fasting and seeking God for an outpouring of His Spirit on my life and upon our church. And if you know me, you know that in my decades of ministry years I have never told a story like I’m going to tell right now.

I’d been praying for revival. I had been seeking God for revival in our church and in my home and I had a very extraordinary experience with the Lord that I waited 2 years to tell anyone about it.

I had a dream. In my dream, God’s Spirit was moving in our nation like a downpour—like the river of God was washing over this land and I’m telling you, it was God. I don’t remember any details. There are no pictures in my mind of what I saw and I don’t describe that as a supernatural revelation, but I’ll say this. It was so moving to me and so strongly desirous to me that when I woke up in the middle of the night, my pillow was wet with tears of joy of what it would be like to live in a day when God moved like that. And I got out of bed and all I can tell you is, I had a 5-point outline in my head.

The first point was this: God on the Throne: a picture of holiness. We’ve lost this. The exalted, high, lifted up, high, above everything. A picture of holiness.
The second thing was this: Sin in the Mirror: a picture of brokenness. Sin in the mirror. You know we’re so good at seeing sin everywhere else, aren’t we? Sin in our neighbors, sin in my spouse, sin in the newspaper. How about sin in the mirror? Brokenness.

Here was the third thing: Self in the Dirt: a picture of repentance. Real repentance. Real brokenness over sin. I don’t want this anymore for my life and I’m going to do whatever it takes to get it out of my life.

Here’s the fourth thing: Christ on the Cross: a picture of grace. The reason why grace is not more glorious to us is that sin is not seen in the mirror and self is not seen in the dirt. Who revels in the solution to a problem they don’t recognize? When sin is in the mirror and self is in the dirt, let me tell you, Christ on the Cross is glorious!

And then just this, Spirit in Control: a picture of power. Now those five things are the core of this book, Downpour: He Will Come to Us like the Rain.
That’s what we’re asking for. If you would join me in this desire, begin by making your prayer:

Alright Lord, Nothing off limits. (Just tell the Lord that.) Lord, I want you to be able to go anywhere in my life and say anything to me. Lord, I want to be a man who can stand with holy hands lifting up to you. Nothing is off-limits in my life: no place of carnality, no place of defeat or selfishness or self-indulgence. Lord, all that I am and have, it’s Yours. Take me to a new level of belonging. Give me Lordship like I’ve never known it before. What would it mean to belong wholly to the Lord? Lord, we need a crisis, we need a turning, help us to recognize and repent and return and immerse our church in a mighty working of your Spirit and would eclipse everything we’ve known to date. And start with me. Start with me, Lord. We need a downpour.
