Weight Down Update
Posted by James MacDonald on June 13, 2007 07:36 AM | Comments (12)Well, I was in San Antonio on Monday-Tuesday for the Southern Baptist Pastors Conference--8-9 thousand pastors and a real privilege to speak God's Word to them. I am now at 219 which I am very encouraged about. Last weekend was the first time I was getting a lot of comments from people at church about looking slimmer. It's not coming off as fast as I would like but I am trusting the Lord and not giving up. A lot of people have been wriitng to me about calorie counting and other scientific data. I think each person has a certain amount of tolerance and time for analysis in regard to their diet and I would be pretty low on that scale. I am sticking to one or two meals a day, almost never a dessert and focused activity, be it walking or running or riding a bike. I am happy with what I have accomplished so far though I had hoped for more. WIth my schedule I think I have done well. Two weeks to go til lthe wedding and trying to make sure I keep going down. Thanks for your prayers, keep 'em coming :)
James
PS Here's a great verse from one of our readers, to keep us keeping on!
1Cor15:58 - Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Just wanted to say that it is an encouragement to see you under your 220 goal. If it was anything like I have been going through I commend you. I have never craved french fries and hamburgers as much as in the past few weeks. Though I am glad to say I am down from 213 to 206.5. I have been watching what I eat and exercising. I don’t count calories, but try to watch the fried foods and the red meats. I am going on vacation soon so I would like to be fewer than 200 by then. It is hard but I want to have disciplined. I am praying for you Pastor James and I know we can keep on making it happen.

Hey - congrats on breaking the 220 barrier! That's awesome - no wait, God is awesome ;-) But, that's still great! I'm down 3 pounds this week - Woo Hoo! I'll keep praying for you. I was waiting for another verse, but then decided that you shouldn't always have to carry that burden! Here is my verse of focus for weight-loss this week - 1Cor15:58 - Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Hey Pastor James-
I was the worship leader that lead the music before you spoke...and after you spoke when you asked us to do "Mighty To Save". I just want to thank you for throwing down that message! It was amazing! I also wanted to thank you for letting me be a part of that. It was a huge encouragement to me. You definitely brought it how it needs to be "brought". Thanks again for the opportunity to minister with you, brother. I enjoyed it a great deal!
Editor:
Thanks Nathan, you guys were so godly, and flexible, and fantastic to work with. Let's do it again sometime, when we can do a full blown, worship/proclamation extravaganza. OK?

Good for you Sir. Being in my 30's, I am starting to realize that my metabolism does not work as is previously has. I am having to start watching my diet and that STINKS!
On a sad note, I just learned that Ruth Graham is comatose. Let's lift her and Mr. Graham up to our Father in prayer.

I had lost 4 lbs. just before joining with you, James. Now I'm down 5 lbs. since we started, with 5 more to go. It's been good to say no to some things I love to eat. As the saying goes, "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels.":) And NOTHING compares to the Lord: "Taste and see that the LORD is good. Oh, the joys of those who trust in Him!" (Ps. 34:8) Reminds me of my favorite verse, which I share with you, James: "Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O LORD, God of hosts." (Jer. 15:16) Be encouraged everyone!

Becoming over-weight!
What peramiters do we have in place that indicate to us that indeed we are over-weight and we need to do something about it.
Pain - This is one source which helps us recognize that we have over eaten. Thanksgiving for me it one of those kind of days.
Pants to tight - This may or may not cause you to act, because if your like most people we have fat pants and thin pants.
Possibly out of breath - Going up four flights of stirs gave me that indication. It also put up the red flag of me being out of shape.
Other people's comments - One day while my wife and I were in the waiting area of the E.R. my wife looked over to a woman and her husband on my left and said, "When are you due?" (thinking she was pregnant). She promptly responded, "I'm not pregnanat" and her husband laughingly said, Ya, Honey when are you due" while patting her stomach. Of coarse, my wife was motified, she only asked the lady because my wife was pregnant at the time.
I was wondering Pastor James what indications do we have or should we put in place when we are spiritually over-weight. Some examples biblically: The one that left the 99, prodical son, David, etc...

I am an internet listener from Texas. I have been a Registered Dietitian for 30 years. I truly believe God designed our bodies to survive the hard times (as when crops fail, storms destroy the crops, etc) people did not starve. They nearly always survived to work another year.
When less calories come in (modern times this is called dieting), less frequently (modern times this is skipping meals) - our bodies respond by slowing our metabolism (men can think of this as RPM's on the motor). This saves energy - now-a-days, it makes it harder to lose the "extra" weight we have gained. Olden days, it enabled mankind to endure hard times.
We weren't designed for "plenty" or overindulgence but survival in scarcity & famine.
The actual design of our systems helps make it harder to lose weight...almost like a consequence for the sin of glutony.
Amazing Awesome God

Hey Pastor James...
Congrats on getting below 220. I think it's important to set smaller goals along the way to whatever the end one might be. I am almost at my first smaller goal. I had to join Weight Watchers to really get myself going, but in 3 weeks, I've lost 3.5 of the 20 pounds I want to lose. And I actually pray about it. Amazing :)
I hope we'll be coming to visit your church soon... then we can see your slim self in person!

One or two meals a day? All day? You do know that your body will slow things down and it will be harder to lose because it thinks you are starving it. I have liked The Maker's Diet. I don't like running, but I have been liking the walking. Hang in there! Thanks for being so transparent and sharing!

first things first Mr Macdonald congrats on your weight loss. It feels to accomplish something especially in regards to our health and such. However and I dont mean to be a downer:) but 1 to 2 meals a day is actually really bad for you. 5 to 6 small meals a day has statistically been shown along with exercise to yield better results. When eating just 1 to 2 meals a day your body will go into starvation mode and whatever food it gets it will likely store it as fat cuz it doesnt know how long it will be until it gets it's next meal. 5 to 6 meals will speed up your metabolism and make your body more effient at burning fat. When you lost the weight was it quickly or more like 1 to 2, maybe 3 pounds a week? That is the ideal rate at which you want to lose weight cuz studies show that when you lose it slowly like that it is most likely all fat. However if you lose it fast it's most likely gonna contain muscle as well, which isn't good. I know I know more info than anyone wanted to hear but just trying to be helpful:). I really appreciate your ministry and listen to you regularly along with my wife and family. Keep the blogs coming, I love em!!! Take care.....
